Paintings by Rocco

This impressionist painting is signed "Rocco".

There is a bit of controversy over the origin and value of these types of paintings as the Antiques and the Arts Forum showed recently, as excerpted below. Are these paintings signed "Rocco" really massed-produced art sold by Montgomery Ward in the 1960's? They appear to be quite common.

If you have further information on these types of paintings, or if you have a painting which is signed by "Rocco" and appears to be in a similar style, consider emailing a picture of it to me for posting on this blog. Let's get to the bottom of this.

Personally, I find the paintings to be interesting. They are almost absurdly impressionistic-- almost a cartoon mockery of French Impressionism. Even if they were mass produced, they had to be hand painted by someone with skill. I find the entire phenomenon to be an entertaining scandal, and worthy of some investigation.

Question Image
The question is, Who was the artist who painted street scenes in Paris (Moulin Rouge) in the impressionist style with oil on canvas and signed their painting something like Ricco or Rocco? What is the artists name and where can I learn more about the artists work? - Tim: Aug 23 2003 2:30AM

I have a 18 x 24" oil painting depicting a female in paris (in a plaza with sacre couer cathedral in the background)around 1890's?? in impressionist style. It has an Anco Bilt frame and I acquired it in an antique shop in Fairfield County, CT. The signarure reads W Stam Park or Lustam Park or Stan Park it is difficult to make out. Does anybody know anything about the artist and year made. - curious: 12/23/2007 10:03:48 PM
I have one too - Must be 3 foot high by 5 foot wide, wooden gold frame. I've been searching for years for the painter. I think we are looking at a mass production of some kind of art school as someone else said. Anyway, I was lead to Michael Rocco who does watercolor scenes, but he always signs his full name and never dabbles in oil paint. My scene is pretty much identical to the one above, raining, cafes and a horse and buggy as well. - stater75: 12/12/2007 3:40:20 PM

I too have a Rocco painting which I purchased from an estate sale. Actually its the only estate sale Ive been to and the only thing I purchased. I was told it is about 60 yrs old. I had an artist friend look at it and was told it maybe around $2000 to $3000, but not sure. Its of a wet day somewhere in Paris. Have no clue if any of this is true but love the painting. Has anyone yet been able to find out what these paintings are worth. Very wonderful paintings. Thanks - Llowps: 12/31/2006 2:00:21 AM
I too have a Rocco painting of women walking in a European city street - very pleasant with their being abstract and reflected on the pavement while the buildings are clear. It has the label with the bio information. So what are people thinking these are worth? I'm going to put mine at my eBay store for what might be an outrageous price but people can make lower offers. I've had the painting on my wall for three or more years and it doesn't get old. Thanks for starting this site - I couldn't find much a few years ago. - Katherine: 12/1/2006 11:30:23 AM

My Rocco painting is a street with the Paris Opera House in the background. It is signed in lower right hand corner as Rocco - there is no first initial or date. I purchased it in an antique mall. I was excited to find this site regarding the painter and would love to see photos of other paintings and to find out in what states other paintings were purchased, located/reside currently. Has anyone learned more about his background? - s - dallas, tx: 7/29/2006 9:20:34 PM

I'd love to learn anything about my "seating fool" painting from artist M.Meshniak (very hard to read the name). That painting is built onto anco bilt frame which is a plastic-like, ornamental one.Unfortunatelly I don't have any image avaiable at this time. Painting looks like pretty old. Thank You for anything. - modraszek@aol.com: 2/8/2005 10:18:35 AM
I too have a Rocco painting but it is either a spanish or italian scene. A woman in it has a short dress on yet there's a horse and buggy too. She may be holding her dress up as yours above seem to (I can't enlarge your picture to tell). Check out the frame of your pic - is it plastic-like or sirroco type? My frame is made by Anco-Bilt and the framer was named Spellco Frame and Art out of Stamford, CT. There was no zip code on Spellco's address so I think it was done prior to 1966. That doesn't date the pix tho - and all the Rocco I've looked up on the net are old, old painters or Keith Rocco who mainly did Civil War pix. - Pattyp00: 1/4/2005 6:15:48 PM
